Class R

Curriculum Overview 2016-17

Developing and maintaining positive relationships enables children to be strong, resilient and independent.

These skills are  essential to our approach in Class R.  All children develop and learn in different ways and at different rates, by leading their own play and by taking part in play which is guided by adults. We aim to provide learning and development opportunities which are planned around the needs and interests of each individual child.

Throughout the year, we plan a broad range of activities and experiences which enable the children to develop three characteristics of effective learning:

Playing and exploring

Your child will have opportunities to:

  • Find out and explore things
  • Be willing to ‘have a go
  • Play with what he/she knows

Active learning

Your child will have opportunities to:

  • Be actively involved and concentrate on what he/she does
  • Enjoy achieving the things he/she set out to do
  • Keep on trying and overcome difficulties

Creating and thinking critically

Your child will have opportunities to:

  • Have and develop his/her own ideas
  • Choose ways to do things
  • Make links between ideas

The curriculum in Class R incorporates seven areas of learning and development which are all

important and interconnected.

Each of these areas is implemented through planned and spontaneous, purposeful play, with a combination

of adult-led and child-initiated activity. Working from the needs and interests of the children, the curriculum

is delivered through a series of short topics which are planned as we go through the year to cover all aspects

of learning and development.
