Homework is usually set each Friday. Please ensure that the homework books are returned by the following Thursday. The non-optional core homework consists of reading, writing, spelling and number activities. There will also be work set relating to other curriculum topics from time to time. This is optional homework.
Reading should preferably be a daily activity where parents listen and read with their children for at least 5 minutes each day. Sometimes this will not be possible but try to aim for 30 minutes per week. If you child is tired, it may be better to read to them or to take turns. Re-reading books and pages is a very useful way of embedding their learning of any new word and helping your child to take in the story. The comments you put in the reading record are very helpful. If you child is also reading other books at home, it is helpful if you can also mention this.
Spelling is now a significant section of the key stage one curriculum and there are a large number of words which children are expected to be able to spell by the end of Year 2. I will therefore be working with the children at school on their spellings on a daily basis as well as including spellings in their core homework. I hope the spelling ideas in their homework books help you to work with your child. Children of this age often find spelling difficult. I would prefer frequent short bursts of practise particularly if your child finds it a tricky chore. You can choose to target say four of the words if that is more achievable.
Your child should also aim to spend no more than 30 minutes per week on any number homework.
